The Masgalano is the award given to the “most elegant” comparsa (contingent in the historical procession) of the 17 Contrade. Points are tallied after both the July and August Palii, and the winner is announced.* It may not seem as prestigious as winning the Palio itself, but it represents the achievements of the entire Contrada and is an honour to receive.
The Minimasgalano is for the children who have been training with the drums and flags, and 1 tamburino (drummer) and 2 alfieri (flag wavers) will dress in their Contrada’s colours to compete in the Piazza del Campo today.
