This exhibition includes works spanning 50 years by Tuscan artist Giuseppe Gavazzi. His brightly painted terracotta, stucco, and wooden sculptures are both whimsical and profound, joyous and unsettling. Wandering through the labyrinth beneath what was once the world’s longest-running hospital, you will delight in each sculpture, some occupying larger spaces, some hiding in the shadows. I guarantee you will love this experience! Then, of course, you can enjoy the rest of the hospital and learn about its history too (!).
Giuseppe Gavazzi was born in France in 1936 to Tuscan parents, he grew up and still works in Pistoia. Not only is he an accomplished artist, but he is also a world-renowned art restorer. His son Massimo Gavizzi is currently the head restorer for Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s Allegories of Good and Bad Government frescoes (ca. 1340) in the Palazzo Pubblico, Siena.
