Even if you don’t follow cycling, this is an exciting race to behold! It begins in the morning from the Fortezza Medicea, and the cyclists will go for many many kilometers (215km for the men, 137km for the women) on both paved and unpaved roads, or “strade bianche” in Italian). The exhilarating final stretch is the gruelling Via Santa Caterina, all uphill (your thighs will burn just watching the competitors!), but the cyclists will all finish triumphantly in the Piazza del Campo.
Navigating through town today could be a bit difficult from about noon until the early evening as first the men and then the women complete the circuit, so just be patient, and enjoy the sporty atmosphere (and all that spandex!).
